April 21, 2021, Columbus, Georgia — Youth Orchestra of Greater Columbus (YOGC) has forged a new partnership with Calvary Christian School to host its 2021 Summer String Camp from June 7th-12th. This camp is the perfect opportunity for violin, viola, cello, and bass school-aged musicians to perform music in a wide variety of styles and ensemble sizes in a fun and welcoming environment. Any elementary, middle, or high school student who has been playing in their school ensemble or taking private lessons for at least one school year is eligible to attend.
The 2020-2021 season provided many challenges for an organization based around group gatherings, while also creating opportunities for innovation and collaboration. Partnering with the Columbus Convention and Trade Center for season rehearsals was the first step in ensuring students could continue performing together. Securing a summer camp location with enough space for socially distanced full-orchestra rehearsals, as well as additional spaces for smaller sectional practices, remained a hurdle until YOGC board member Jim Koan suggested a solution. The Headmaster of Calvary Christian School, Mr. Koan offered the use of the school’s auditorium and classrooms to accommodate the week-long camp.
“YOGC has consistently and successfully worked as a team to provide safe, in-person music rehearsals and concerts since October 2020. Our 2021 Summer String Camp will be no different. Our Music Director, Artistic Staff, and myself are committed to creating a safe, fun, welcoming environment. This is going to be a week full of music, learning, and fun. I hope you will join us as a camper or an audience member at the final concert!” – Stephanie Payne, YOGC Executive Director.
Summer String Camp runs Monday, June 7th through Friday, June 11th, from 8:30AM to 4:30PM, and Saturday, June 12th from 9:00AM to 3:00PM. Lunch is provided daily for participants. All participants will perform in a free concert at 1:30PM on Saturday, June 12th on the grounds of Calvary Christian. Please visit http://yogc.org/summercamp/ for more information or to register for camp. Tuition is $250 for the week. Payment plans and financial aid are available. YOGC is committed to removing all barriers so that any qualified musician can attend camp.
Since 1993, the Youth Orchestra of Greater Columbus has been teaching the area’s most talented young musicians. Led by nationally-awarded Music Director and Conductor Jim Palmer, YOGC maintains the only symphonic orchestral opportunity in the region for string, brass, wind, and percussion musicians; a string orchestra for intermediate string players; a chamber group program; a non-adjudicated music festival provided at no cost to local public school music programs; and a week-long summer string camp focused on alternative genres of music and playing styles.
