Audition times will be assigned for all registered musicians. We promise to work with every family to make sure we do everything we can to accommodate schedules and any other barriers to auditioning. You can reach out at info@yogc.org with any questions you may have.

String Orchestra Audition Requirements

(String players with at least one year of school orchestra or private lesson experience.)

SCALES
Violin, Viola and Cello: Choose any 2 of the following TWO OCTAVE Scales:

  • C, D, F, G, and A

String Basses: Choose any 2 of the following ONE OCTAVE Scales:

  • E, F, G, A and C.

Please play scales with a full beautiful tone: Quarter note = 88.

SOLO
Prepare and perform any solo of your choice. A well prepared audition will include a solo that features both lyrical and technical aspects. The Suzuki Series is an excellent resource.

SIGHT READING
Students will be asked to sight read a composition that is appropriate for the String Orchestra. The student will be given 1 minute to look over a short excerpt and then asked to play it to the best of their ability.

Youth Symphony Orchestra Audition Requirements

(Full orchestra; Must be able to compete at an All-State High School level.)

SCALES
Violin: Choose any 2 of the following THREE OCTAVE Scales:

  • G, A, Bb and C

Viola and Cello: Choose any 2 of the following THREE OCTAVE Scales:

  • C, D, Eb and F

String Bass: Choose any 2 of the following TWO OCTAVE Scales:

  • E, F, G, A, Bb and C.

Woodwinds AND Brass: Play two scales of the students choice. One will be allstate style with the first degree/tonic being a quarter note and the rest eighth notes. The other will be played as all whole notes.

Percussion: Play two scales of the students choice. One will be allstate style with the first degree/tonic being a quarter note and the rest eighth notes. The other will be played as all whole notes.

Keyboard: Play two scales of the students choice on a keyboard instrument.

Please play scales with a full beautiful tone: Quarter note = 88.

SOLO
Prepare and perform any solo of your choice. A well prepared audition will include a solo that features both lyrical and technical aspects.

**Percussion: Prepare and perform a solo OR excerpt on all of the following instruments: Snare, timpani and any keyboard instrument.
