Due to the ongoing health concerns as well as the continued closure of Schwob and MCSD schools, any musician active in YOGC as of March 9, 2020 may skip the audition process and automatically be re-enrolled in YOGC for the 2020-2021 season if they are happy with their ensemble placement.
Therefore, you only have to audition if one of the following conditions is true:
  1. You were not in the String or Youth Symphony Orchestra during the 2019-2020 season
  2. You were in the String or Youth Symphony Orchestra at some point during the 2019-2020 season but had dropped out before March 9, 2020
  3. You were in the String Orchestra for the 2019-2020 season and would like to try and audition into the Youth Symphony Orchestra.

For those of you who are interested in auditioning for the woodwind, brass, or percussion sections:
Even with this decision, YOGC has at least one opening in every section available for potential new musicians.

For those of you who will be auditioning:
We are currently waiting to see when Schwob or a suitable audition venue will open up before we determine audition dates and times. We promise to work with every family to make sure we do everything we can to accommodate schedules and any other barriers to auditioning. You can reach me at spayne@yogc.org with any questions you may have.

For those who are eligible to skip auditioning but have already paid the registration fee:
We would be very grateful if you would be willing to convert the $10 fee into a tax-deductible donation. YOGC lost over $20,000 in revenue due to COVID-19, and we anticipate additional funding reductions into the new season. Please reach out to me at spayne@yogc.org to confirm this choice or to discuss additional options.

Audition Location:
Auditions will be held at Columbus State University’s Schwob School of Music at RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, located at 900 Broadway, at the corner of 9th Street and Broadway. Each audition is limited to 10 minutes. You should arrive early to warm up and tune. Practice rooms will be available. Auditions will be competitive and will dictate chair placement. The conductor reserves the right to re-audition instrument sections and rotate chair placement throughout the season. Former members of the YOGC are not guaranteed a position and must audition each year.

Audition Requirements:
Submit completed application online or by mail along with the $10 registration fee. Download the 2020-2021 YOGC Auditions brochure for detailed requirements or view online. Prepare your solo and the required scales as detailed in the audition instructions to the best of your ability. All students interested in participating with YOGC must audition in May or June. August audition dates will only be used for open slots, and they will not be scheduled until after June auditions.  Please call the YOGC office if you need to request a specific time on an audition day.

You will be asked to acknowledge that you have read and agree to comply with the YOGC Handbook.
Download the YOGC Handbook here.
